Visitors to Destin, Fl, are sometimes amazed at the sight just off of Destin’s Marler Bridge — dozens of boats congregating on a large submerged sand bar on the north side of Destin’s East Pass. Welcome to Crab Island where all the locals come to hang out, play in the clear water and have a good time. The spot is particularly busy during the Billy Bowlegs Festival in nearby Fort Walton Beach and on weekends and holidays.
At Crab Island one can relax or swim while listening to the live broadcast that a local radio station provides on location. Other common sites includes a floating snack bar, jet ski pizza delivery, and aquatic ice cream “truck.” Aside from the throngs of boats and people, dolphins, stingrays and the rare but occasional manatee will sometimes be spotted swimming nearby.
Most activities on Crab Island center around sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, frisbee, football and water games. People arrive by boat, kayak, jet ski and even stand-up paddleboard (SUP.) Although it is possible to swim to the island, swimming through the busy boat channel is not recommended.
Getting there is easy, just rent a jet ski or pontoon boat from the Destin Harbor or cruise up to the island on a private boat. For those looking to do some fishing, the bridge supports are a great place to fish. Head on out to Crab Island this summer and have some fun.
