Alaqua Creek Park
Alaqua Creek has been on my list of places to explore for some time now, but circumstances have thus far prevented me from dropping my kayak into the waters here. Nevertheless, I did find time to explore the park for a future trip. Upon arriving the first thing one notices is that ample parking is provided. This is ideal as the park provides a boat ramp and dock. Alaqua Creek stretches several miles in length but is only about a mile and a half from Alaqua Bayou and Choctawhatchee Bay.

For the regular visitors just seeking to enjoy a day at the creek there is a small swim area complete with rope swing as well as a covered pavilion containing several picnic tables and a grill. A portable toilet has been provided for convenience. It is apparent that the this park is geared mainly toward fishing and boating. For those planning to travel upstream it should be noted that an Eglin recreation pass is required.

According to local paddlers there is a put-in on the Eglin Reservation on RR 205, but the access is muddy and difficult to negotiate and requires teamwork. About a mile past Alaqua Creek Park there is a take-out at Portland Park Boat Ramp right before the bayou empties into the bayou and bay.
Alaqua Creek Park is located on Hwy 20 three miles west of Freeport, Fla., or at 30.512189, -86.186890. Park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. No alcohol permitted.
